Artist Statement

The series consists of nine images capturing different moments of nightlife, while highlighting the irony of the city being empty due to quarantine and social distancing. The work focuses on illuminated lights, specifically red and blue, which appear across various images in different settings. These lights bring a sense of lively energy to viewers despite the absence of people. This exploration encourages a more intimate engagement with the environment while prompting audiences to reflect on the space and time we currently inhabit.

The project began with an interest in night lights on streets and alleyways and evolved through a consideration of the relationship between lights and people. The main inspiration was Nam June Paik’s Electronic Superhighway, where vibrant coloured lights immediately draw attention, while subtle details of faces and texts emerge on small screens. This approach informs the series’ use of lighting and composition to convey different moods. Self-portraits were captured inside a residential property, while the remaining images were taken outdoors during site explorations.
