Behind the work.
This project involved the design and construction of a contemporary coffee table inspired by clean, modern forms and crafted with a balance of traditional skill and workshop precision. The table is made from American Walnut, fully sourced by the maker, and features a modular shelving system with three adjustable heights for versatility and functionality.
The project placed a strong emphasis on craftsmanship, showcasing a variety of techniques. Traditional hand-tool methods were employed, including joinery approaches using the plane, chisel, and mallet. These were complemented by workshop machinery processes, incorporating the band saw, drop saw, planer, jointer, and sanding machines to ensure precision and refinement throughout the build.
Finishing was approached with equal care, with a clear lacquer applied to highlight the natural chatoyancy of the Walnut, enhancing its depth and rich texture. The completed work achieved a balance of functionality, material expression, and contemporary design.
The table was later exhibited among other furniture works, presenting the outcome in a professional setting and demonstrating the integration of design, craftsmanship, and material exploration.
